“Saddle up boys, It’s Time To Go Race’n”
Welcome participants and race fans to the 2016 Classic Speedway Racing Association, CSRA, ‘Tri-Race Sweepstakes’ Oct. 15th at Marysville Speedway. A very fast, banked, wide, 1/4 mile clay oval. Nov. 4th at the 144 year old Stockton Fairgrounds. A very fast, sometimes heavy, big, wide, clay dirt track with nice parabolic banking and no fences. [1/2 mile outside]
CSRA sanctioned events race vintage speedway racers that are well prepared, organized, professional an you’ll never wait for this organization to get on track when it’s ‘Show Time’.
OutLaw Racers run on dirt, love big monster tracks with hairy speeds an use asphalt to get there.
Tri-Race Sweepstakes series is sanctioned by the CSRA. You can find information about the CSRA Rules etc… in this online magazine.
All racers and cars have free ‘Hero Cards’ for fans after the races with all drivers more than obliging to sign autographs. No premadonnas here.
People love the vintage relics especially in full race condition. Many times these racers are better than original an a little more dependable albeit still a race car. CSRA fans in particular, enjoy the fact no two are the same. The racing fully takes on the appearance of an old school ‘Open Competition’ because it is !
Where else are you going to see a SuperModified literally wheel on wheel racing a Knoxville National Hall Of Fame USAC Champ Car or USAC Sprint Car…. at the same time and fighting hard. Who will prevail, what machine will out run who, on what track ?
The CSRA takes racing a little more seriously, so don’t let the age requirement fool you. Kinser raced in his fifties and CSRA has drivers in that range. As the country song goes, “I’m as good as I ever was, once.” So don’t be surprised a race breaks out when the OutLaw Vintage Racers ride into town.
Not since the late 60’s and 70’s have we seen this kind of dueling.

This historicaly significant West Coast USAC Champ Car is featured, mentioned or pictured on 23 pages of the hard cover book ‘Dirt Road To A Silver Crown’
33 USAC Champ Car outings on the biggest dirt tracks at the most prestigious races in the country.
Chassis bent up by Chuck Delu HOF, built by Duke McMillen HOF for Ed Watson HOF and ran the ‘Thunder and Lighting Division’. This was often refereed to as the Big Dirt Track Fairground Circuit. Specifically built for the arduous grind of a 100 mile Champ Car race on an ever deteriorating surface. The big 1 mile dirt tracks required much and careful considerations. All of that forethought is evident, like a time capsule, for all of us to see because the Champ Car is left as it was on the track one day, in 1995 when it retired.
3rd on the pole at Indy. Many Hall of Fame drivers, owners, builder and mechanics touched this nationally campaigned west coast big dirt track speed merchant. A who’s who of West Coast Stars who made it to the biggest dirt shows in the United States.

1978 SARGENT SAN JOSE SUPERMODIFIED
Rebuilt and set up by a legend, Smoken Joe Diaz HOF
Smoken Joe was an Outlaw before there were Outlaws. Traveling the US by himself hitting tracks where ever he stopped in the 60’s 70’s, Smoken had amassed 550 wins. We know why he’s the grand master. This SuperModified was ‘OutLawed’ from racing other Supers because they claimed ‘un-fair advantage’ [Understandable- Smoken sets a car up to win] so now the former Smoken Joe Diaz ‘Dangerous Duece’ 410 SuperModified Missile rides with OutLaw Racers.

They knew it was special, they marveled at it’s performances, admired the iconic one day Hall of Fame Drivers who’s names still stir many emotions. Legends by all accounts. Its drivers, its owver an its Legendary builder, ‘Duke’ Pyron Gallaway McMillen… they knew… they knew someone would come… an one day they came, sent by the ‘Duke’
ITS BEEN A LONG ROAD HOME DUKE…

Duke asked me to personally get this car and restore as I had with his other Hall of Fame Champ Car. His wish was particularly sweet when he pulled a little piece of paper out of his wallet with just 7 numbers. Duke said, “Here’s their number go get it. They have saved it for a long time.” …. Indeed Duke.

CHEVROLET’ SUPERMODIFIED
Winner of 42 races in 58 outings.
Duke’s personal pride and joy SuperModified. Duke McMillen personally request to find, recover, restore and race his beloved, Tommy Boltinghouse Chevrolet SuperModified.
A dirt marvel far ahead of its time even today. Duke told me that I would find out many things about this racer when along side the Champ Car, he laughed, they were built along side each other. He said, there will be things revealed on this SuperModified that no one knows. And yes, we’ve already discovered several but, one that still blows our collective minds. What a spectacular secret. A significant secret still visible in the pictures above on chassis #oo1 of six built with this innovative exclusive design. [if you knew where to look !]

What a sparkely gem that runs as good as it looks !
These guys miss nothing with attention to detail.
Rich of course was born on the dirt an almost won the nationally coveted West Capital Speedway title coming with-in 1 point of the Championship.[Joe Hill won the title that year in ’78]
Considered by his peers as a real nice guy who knew where he was on the track.
We asked Rich why number 92… He said, ‘when I was a young man I saw LeRoy Van Connet drive around everyone all the way from the back of the pack. That race car was number 92. It was an unbelievable drive. It was right then and there, I decided that was the number for me, 92.’
